Out of the plethora of issues that ENT pediatricians treat, there are certainly some that occur more frequently than others. One of the biggest causes of ENT problems includes the common cold or flu viruses. This is simply due the fact that children do not have as developed immune systems quite yet, and the virus can spread to parts of the ears, nose, or throat, and cause infection. Ear infections in particular are seen frequently by ENT specialists and is attributed to the fact that it is easier for viruses and bacteria to get trapped in the ear for children, not to mention the wide variety of bacteria and viruses that children have not encountered, and as such, a pediatric ENT specialist is able to help identify a method of treatment based on the symptoms experienced, especially for recurring and lingering issues. While these are situations that pediatric ENT specialists are very experienced with, there are a great number of other conditions that they are able to help diagnose and treat and as such, people should not hesitate to reach out if their child needs care.
There are many symptoms to look out for when it comes to ENT infections involving children. ENT infection symptoms are very closely related to flu and cold symptoms as they may be caused due to the same virus or bacteria. Because of this, being observant of symptoms such as fever, stuffy and runny nose, or itchiness in the throat or eyes can be a slight indicator. Additionally, be on the lookout for discharge, swelling, fever, pain, and cough, as these can be more apparent signs of infection. While it can be difficult to differentiate between a simple cold or infection at times, a child may also display signs of visible discomfort such as scratching or tugging at the ear, nose, or throat, trouble sleeping, or difficulty balancing which can likely indicate the possibility of infection. It is important to get a qualified medical professional’s opinion in this case, and seek treatment as soon as possible as infections can escalate if not properly cared for.
ENT infections are the result of a bacteria or virus. The process of gaining the infection will begin with contracting the virus or bacteria either from another person, or from touching a contaminated surface then the nose, eye, mouth, or ear area. From here, it may begin to multiply and spread if the immune system is not accustomed to the specific virus or bacteria, and a patient will begin to experience a variety of symptoms. This is oftentimes in the form of fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, etc.. From here, the bacteria or virus can become trapped within a space and infection can develop. A child’s ear specifically is very susceptible to this due to how the middle ear in children is positioned. While not every child will experience this, it is certainly a possibility that should be considered when a child is displaying visible discomfort and illness.
The difference between a pediatric ENT physician and an ENT physician is the patients they interact with and treat. Pediatrics is the field of medicine that specifically treats children, as they are still developing and oftentimes call for different treatment methods compared to that of a fully grown adult. One example of differing treatment people can recall is the dosages of certain medications. Usually kids get a far smaller dose of medications than adults as it is far safer, and a child’s body may only be able to handle so much. Additionally, some drugs are generally unsafe for children to go through with compared to adults. So accordingly, a pediatric ENT doctor specifically treats children with their problems in close proximity to the ears, nose, and throat, whereas an ENT doctor would treat adults with issues in the stated areas. There can be significant variation between the treatments as stated previously, which is why there is a necessity for both pediatric and adult specific care.
